“That was regrettable. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Recent examples include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
