British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages down to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.
There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.
UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "Including them were thousands of British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."
Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
