Space Traveler Reveals Depression Following Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the landing.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose support pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the mission, such as increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The diverse crew also comprised leaders in various fields.
The enterprise behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
