The star has given the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to save the UK's small live music spots.

Fender was given the prize on mid-October as his third album the album was named the top album of the past year.

Fender has opted to donate the funds to the trust, in appreciation of the vital role small stages had in his initial steps.

"I personally wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the performances I played around the region, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," said Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these spaces have shut down – roughly one-sixth of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, top acts like Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which supports local stages.

He also took part, collecting over £100k on his recent tour to assist thirty-eight small stages across Britain.

The donation assisted spaces that were facing possible closure due to difficulties caused by water damage, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and sound issues.

Other venues obtained monetary aid in modernizing infrastructure and technical equipment that directly benefitted artists and audiences.

"The notion that funds from concerts in major spaces helps the local stages, where it begins for musicians like me, is just common sense," the star has commented.

Fender is far from the only musician to give his award prize money to charitable organizations.

When Pulp earned the award in the year 1996 for their release the album, frontman Cocker announced that the band would contribute their winnings to the organization War Child.

In 2002, artist Ms Dynamite shared her award across a few good causes, like the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I contributed a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they required better apparatus," she shared with the media.

Two years ago, the band contributed their funds to the youth organization that nurtured their band, in addition to other local music groups.

And 1994 winners the group gave their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a close contact was found to have the condition.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," said vocalist Heather Small. "The money was the bonus but we could do without the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our success affected another person's life."

In the past week, the MVT shared it had saved several small stages in south-east England, by bringing them into community ownership.

The Joiners in Southampton and the other in that location were purchased under the public acquisition scheme, which is backed by a national body and supporters who acquire "ownership units" in the buildings.
