US Military Operation on Venezuela Stokes Concerns of Potential Danish Territory Annexation.

The recent American military action in Venezuela and the capture of its leader have sparked worry regarding Washington's designs on Greenland. Supporters of the former president's political movement have reportedly set their sights on the strategically important landmass following the events in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Messages and Diplomatic Outrage

Merely a short time after the commencement of the Venezuelan campaign, a prominent right-wing commentator, who is married to a senior presidential adviser, posted a symbolic map. The picture showed Greenland covered in the stars and stripes, accompanied by cryptic message: "COMING."

This blatant threat to claim the resource-abundant region, which is a part of the North Atlantic alliance, triggered immediate and strong condemnation from Danish officials.

"We are close allies and should keep work together as such. American security is equally Greenland’s and Denmark’s security," declared the Danish ambassador to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States work together to ensure security in the Arctic."

The ambassador additionally highlighted that the kingdom had significantly increased its military budget recently, allocating a large amount specifically for Northern and North Atlantic defence. "And yes, we demand complete recognition for the sovereign borders of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Political Moves and Geopolitical Goals

The tensions were additionally exacerbated by the recent naming of a Southern governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The appointee had publicly thanked the commander-in-chief, stating it was an "privilege" to work in a volunteer role to "bring Greenland into the US."

After the events in Venezuela, this representative praised the administration's decisive move, connecting it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Ever since assuming office, the American leader has repeatedly alarmed transatlantic partners with his expressed interest in Greenland. The island is considered vitally strategic for defence and potential mineral exploitation. It currently houses the most northerly US military base.

Leaving the Door Open to Force

In a significant television interview, the president declined to rule out the use of military force to gain control of Greenland. This stance comes during intensifying global rivalry in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He described Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll value them... But we need that for global security."

Growing Tensions and Indigenous Resistance

In reaction to this constant "drumbeat" of intent, Denmark's security agency took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "potential threat."

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland issued a unified and forceful statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland reveals a complex sentiment. While a vast majority of the island's inhabitants desire independence from Denmark, there is simultaneously little to no desire to become part of the United States. The territory has had the legal right to seek sovereignty for over a decade.

Analyst Assessment: A Credible Threat?

Military experts are now reconsidering the likelihood of such a action. One thinktank analyst specializing in military analysis conceded she had previously dismissed the rhetoric but was "currently not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to deploy a couple hundred or a couple thousand troops inside of Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could intervene about it," she concluded.
